Essay of the week - ELI5.0
This week Iâm handling storytelling and documenting the entire Polygonâs HackerHouse for 9 days in Bangalore. Thatâs why Iâm writing a small essay :) thanks for understanding.
Okay! what do I mean by Explain like Iâm 50 and why do I believe itâll be the new ELI5
If you think about it, you canât really explain complex stuff to a 5-year-old, but you can do the same to a 50-year-old. The only thing that lacks is context.
I know you are probably going back to this quote by Albert Einstein âIf you can't explain it to a five-year-old, you don't understand it yourself.â
But in this conversation, Iâm talking about the person whoâs listening and not the person whoâs listening.
The only difference between a 5 year old and a 50 year old is that you can ask them questions.
Letâs take a scenario:
I want to explain âwhat is Web3â to a 50 year old. I can start the conversation by asking him questions like -
âDo you what is Facebook and do you understand how it is centralised?â The answer can be yes for both or yes for one thing (which is Facebook) and no for understanding the centralised world.
Now my job just got easy. I just have to ask a few more questions and explain it easily.
But in the case of a 5-year-old, I canât ask questions.
Conclusion: When you are explaining something to someone, start with questions.
If they donât understand the question or the topic at all, then itâs probably going to take a long time to explain the whole thing to them.
