Essay of the week - ELI5.0
This week Iām handling storytelling and documenting the entire Polygonās HackerHouse for 9 days in Bangalore. Thatās why Iām writing a small essay :) thanks for understanding.
Okay! what do I mean by Explain like Iām 50 and why do I believe itāll be the new ELI5
If you think about it, you canāt really explain complex stuff to a 5-year-old, but you can do the same to a 50-year-old. The only thing that lacks is context.
I know you are probably going back to this quote by Albert Einstein āIf you can't explain it to a five-year-old, you don't understand it yourself.ā
But in this conversation, Iām talking about the person whoās listening and not the person whoās listening.
The only difference between a 5 year old and a 50 year old is that you can ask them questions.
Letās take a scenario:
I want to explain āwhat is Web3ā to a 50 year old. I can start the conversation by asking him questions like -
āDo you what is Facebook and do you understand how it is centralised?ā The answer can be yes for both or yes for one thing (which is Facebook) and no for understanding the centralised world.
Now my job just got easy. I just have to ask a few more questions and explain it easily.
But in the case of a 5-year-old, I canāt ask questions.
Conclusion: When you are explaining something to someone, start with questions.
If they donāt understand the question or the topic at all, then itās probably going to take a long time to explain the whole thing to them.
