How to live till 83

One of the fascinating questions I’ve been constantly trying to figure out an answer to is ā€œHow can humans live longer?ā€

As I’m falling in love with subjects like Cryonics, Slowing down ageing, Organ Cryopreservation, How to live a healthy life, etc. I’m also researching and reading and getting on calls to talk and understand these topics better.

Most people I meet either smoke or drink and every now & then I ask them don’t you want to live till 83. They usually reply with ā€œI don’t want to live that longā€ and I go why not. You only have one life. My end goal is to live till 83 and tell stories to my grandkids. But I think I’ll keep the ā€˜Why’ of this conversation for some other day.

Let’s talk about how.

Last week I finished reading the book ā€œNumbers Don’t Lieā€ by Vaclav Smil and found some interesting concepts. One of the chapters was called ā€œJapanese Diet.ā€

What’s interesting is that Japanese life expectancy is higher than any other country.

The latest numbers (Females/Males, for 2015-20, in years) :

  • Japan - 87.5/81.3

  • Spain - 86.1/80.6

  • France - 85.4/79.4

  • UK - 82.9/79.4 and

  • US - 81.3/76.3

Japan has over 86,000 Centenarians.

But how are they doing this?

Is this genetic?
Most unlikely. Japanese were migrants from the Asian continent.

Must be the religious beliefs then?
Religious belief might describe the Japanese mindset better. There are so many countries with traditional beliefs why are they not living longer.

Diet?
This is probably the best explanation out there. The category ā€˜food’ is pretty wide and I don’t want to bore you with details. Read this page below šŸ‘‡

We can conclude that it must be the Lower Fat and Lower Sugar intakes.

But again this is far from being the most important explanation.

Studies show that the Japanese daily mean is below 1900 kilocalories

This means that perhaps the single most important explanation of Japan's longevity is quite simple: moderate overall food consumption

The habit is expressed in just four kanji characters, č…¹å…«åˆ†ē›®

(Hara hachi bun me, "belly eight parts [in ten] full')

This reminded me of a quote

ā€œEat half, Walk twice, Laugh thrice and love without measureā€ - Tibetan proverb.

Feel free to add something to this conversation. Let’s solve problems and grow old together šŸ™Œā¤ļø
