Refusing to give up
Last week, a friend called me up out of nowhere and asked if I had read βThe Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horseβ book
I said no.
She sent me the book on my kindle and it was a short book. Probably a 15mins read.
I started reading and came across some beautiful words.
Here are few π
"What do you think is the biggest waste of time?"
"Comparing yourself to others", said the mole."
βThis is easily my favourite place,β said the mole
"Why? asked the boy
"Because you are all hereβ"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"Kind", said the boy."Do you have any other advice?" asked the boy.
"Don't measure how valuable you are by the way you are treated," said the horse.""Imagine how we would be if we were less afraid."
"Sometimes I think you believe in me more than I do," said the boy
"You'll catch up," said the horse.""What is the bravest thing you've ever said? asked the boy.
'Help,' said the horse.
'Asking for help isn't giving up,' said the horse. 'It's refusing to give up"
When I was reading this book, I had a constant thought in my mind. The thought was from a conversation with a friend.
Around a week before that, I was in BLR and met Atharva. We were talking about mental battles and how to fight them and then how to rebuild yourself, etc.
Sugarcube: Before you guys ask me how Iβm doing? Iβm doing 100x better now. Iβm constantly rebuilding myself and in a much better mental space. Thanks to all my friends, family and especially my internet friends like you. Your replies to my newsletters and kind words have helped me a lot. In this together.
Ok, now back to this⦠I met him and he told me something that was very interesting.
βWhen you are drowning, you cannot help yourself out by pulling your left hand with your right hand. You need someoneβs else hand to reach inside the water and pull you out.β
I couldnβt stop thinking about this line and then I read this in the book - βAsking for help isn't giving up,' said the horse. 'It's refusing to give up"
The end goal of this essay is to tell you that we often donβt ask for help.
We think we could figure this out. We think we donβt need anyoneβs help. At least thatβs what I think.
In a call, I told my friend that what if Iβm in the 1200s and Iβm a soldier. A soldier stands back up and he replied with something that felt like a slap on my face.
But you are not a soldier Prado. You are you. Taking someoneβs help wonβt make you less of a man.
I started reaching out for help.
I made a list of people I want to talk with and started getting on calls with them during my evening walks.
I texted my sister who is a therapist herself to suggest me one π and I realised that she has a therapist too.
That was when I understood the power of the entire drowning analogy.
βAsking for help isn't giving up, It's refusing to give up"
If you are struggling with mental battles, I highly suggest talking to a therapist.
This may help you understand where you are π
If you donβt know where to start, you can text or call my sister up.
She is the founder of SelfSpace (Hereβs her company number - +91 7010915918)
One last thing, I thought travelling and meeting people I love and talking to more friends on-call would help but at the end of the dayβ¦ I realised that Iβm prolonging the problem. Iβm escaping it. One day or the other I have to face it.
Even though I feel much better right now, Iβm going to therapy this Friday.
Like Atharva said, βYou never know, something deep inside you might be the cause of it allβ
