Essay of the week - The Role of IG Reels in Relaxation
I asked a question on Twitter
Most people said no. My folks on Twitter have a higher IQ and better mental fitness but I feel sometimes when I had a long day I just want to watch a few IG reels and dose off.
Then it hit me what part of the reel relaxes me the most
Is it the song or the visual?
or is it the song getting repeated but with different visuals?
or is it the same song, same kind of visual but presented by a different person creatively?
Then I started working on a thesis.
One of the biggest difference between music then (1970s-80s) and music now is that the 70s and 80s were heavy on lyrics.
They had to be heavy on the lyrics because radio was the shizzz. No TV. No Visuals.
Being heavy on lyrics lead to people visualising the song themselves.
But the music now is different.
Music now is more like aβ¦ idk what to sayβ¦ βFeel good musicβ
Donβt have to be heavy on the lyrics, it just need to sound good and make it go viral by paying the top artists to make small reels.
Soon, everybody is listening to a song even without actually clicking to listen to it.
This lead to three things:
Make the song short and fun.
Recent hit βJust wanna rockβ by Lil Uzi Vert* has only one stanza
Making short songs also help the artist make more money on Spotify. More listen = more money.
Feel good music are good templates for reels.
Visuals are given to people, you donβt have to imagine them anymore.
Conclusion:
The algorithm decides what you listen to.
The algo decides what you should watch.
The algo decides should I make this person feel relaxed, educated, cringe, sad, every feeling out there.
Honestly I donβt know how to proceed forwardβ¦ I kind of like it too. Maybe itβs okay to relax a bit and maybe itβs not.
I recently learned this about me and added a notification if I spend more than 30mins.
Search for Time spent in settings. π
This whole essay came about after I had an interesting thought when I was at the gym and the gym guy played a famous reel song.
My mind got confused on should I relax or hit harder because the song is high energy (motivational kinda song)
What do you think? Itβll be great, if you can answer all three questions π
