Essay of the week - The story of Colin
If you were at Bangalore’s Solana Hacker House then you’d probably have seen Colin around. He works for Solana labs as Dev Rel.
Colin was born and bought up in London but his parents are from Sierra Leone.
I met him on day 1, we connected a few dots and realised we both love education.
SDG #4 - Quality Education (check my twitter header)
He shared his goal of starting a school in Freetown (Capital of Sierra Leone) to teach blockchain, crypto, and web3.
But this requires him to completely move there.
Here’s few things we don’t know about Sierra Leone:
I came across this picture by WaitButWhy 👇
When he was sharing his goal of starting a school, I told him a story from the book Factfullness by Hans Rosling
I paraphrased it to him but the story goes like this:
Hans Rosling once addressed 500 women leaders at "The African Renaissance and Agenda for 2063"
He spoke about small-scale farmers and ending extreme poverty in Africa within 20 years.
Nkosazana Dlamini - Zuma, the chairperson of the African Union Commission thanked him
Hans:- What do you think about my performance?
ND:- Well, the graphics were nice, and you are good at talking, But you don't have any vision'
Hans:- What?! You think I lack vision? But I said that poverty in Africa could be history within 20 years.
ND:- "Oh, yes, you talked about eradicating poverty, which is a beginning, but you stopped there. In the end shared that you hoped your grandchildren would come as tourists to Africa and travel on the new high-speed trains we plan to build. What kind of vision is that?
NDZ *With a warm smile*:- "It is my grandchildren who are going to visit and explore Europe" my 50-year vision is that Africans will be welcome as tourists in Europe and not unwanted refugees.
Colin loved the story and he said from the outside all this may sound good but we are still very behind.
I got curious. I asked him why?
He shared that Sierra Leone is at least 20 years behind. The electricity cuts of 8 hours a day are considered a good day. Infrastructure as a whole is decades behind.
Colin is a dreamer.
The goal Colin is working towards is very much real. It’s a need that can bring real-world change.
Out of all the people I had met at the hacker house, Colin’s story stood out to me.
It’s people like him who dare to take risk and work towards goals which requires doing the unorthodox things and extreme sacrifice.
The world needs more people like Colin. He is building a better world.
