Essay of the week - The Bigger Picture
The first time I came across the term “Bigger Picture” was probably after the listening to Lil Baby’s song titled “Bigger Picture” during Covid times.
Around the same time I was reading Steve Jobs’ Biography written by Walter Isaacson. I had come across another story about bigger picture.
Here’s the story:
Sometime in 1982-83, Steve Jobs came into the cubicle of Larry Kenyon (Larry was an engineer working on the Macintosh OS)
Jobs:- Why is it taking too long to boot up?
Kenyon started to explain, but Jobs cut him off.
Jobs:- "If it could save a person's life, would you find a way to shave 10 secs off the boot time?"
Kenyon:- Well... I probably could.
Jobs got a whiteboard and started writing:
"If there were 5 million people using the mac & it took 10 seconds extra to turn it on every day, that added up to Three hundred million or so hours per year that people would save, which means at least 100 lifetimes saved per year. "
Larry was impressed.
*A few weeks later* He came back and it booted up 28 seconds faster.
"Steve had a way of motivating by looking at the bigger picture."- Bill Atkinson

This trait is found in many great founders and CEOs. They consistently talk about the bigger picture. They revolve most of their ideas around that one single thing.
When I was 18 years old, I made an 83yr old goal. I thought that was my bigger picture.
“I want to be 83 years old, sit on a beach with my grandchildren and tell them stories.” you can read more here
Then I realised that the goal is too far. I need to break it down.
So I took up SDG #4 - Quality Education as my bigger picture.
Everything I do atleast some part of it must lead to quality education.
Since then I started providing value on Twitter, this newsletter, people I talk with, etc.
How to find the bigger picture:
There is no right way to do it. Answering a few questions always help.
here’s are a few questions that you can answer to know your bigger picture.
What matters most to me after family, food & a roof over my head?
Do I wake up in the morning looking forward to work on it?
What is something I can build that will live longer than I will? (This is not a legacy question) This is about providing value long after you are gone :)
Will this become a good story for my grandchildren?
What dream have you never forgotten and why do you think this remains a conscious memory?
What would you do after all the money and fame?
What is a decision I will not regret 50 years down the lane?
What are the battles that people before you (parents, mentors, etc) couldn’t win?
These questions are just a small way to find your bigger picture. Let me know if you do.

Personal Announcement 🚨
I have my birthday in a couple of days and recently I had written about “why men don’t celebrate birthdays” I usually don’t celebrate but this year I’m making sure I get a few friends together and eat some good food. I’m excited and happy of everything I’ve achieved so far in my life. I finally understood that knowing the meaning behind the word enough is the closest we’ll ever get to happiness.
In This Together,
Prado
