essay of the week - what is joy?

i was sitting in a cafe called “Nakey” in Singapore and sipping my cup of coffee. I was watching a few IG reels and I came across a very interesting movie scene of Morgan freeman talking about death.

now, y’all know i spend lots of time thinking and writing about this topic.

Ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about deaths. When the souls got to heaven the gods asked them two questions and their answer determined whether they are admitted or not.

the two questions are:

1. have you found joy in your life?

2. has your life brought joy to others?

now, this 15-30 second reel ended up putting another question in my mind. “What is joy?”

i asked the water for a pieve of paper - he gave a bill and a pen to write.

what is joy?

• making someone happy

• making someone money

• mom watching me going to the temple

• bringing people flowers

• writing little letters

• donating things you no longer need

• making someone laugh (time for my standup comedy arc)

• making someone’s life easy by teaching them something they don’t know

• hosting a karoake night

• buying them books

• supporting them on the internet (reposts, RTs, shoutouts)

• connect them with someone they want to connect with

• show them around

• be a good friend by introducing them to things like music, books, movies, other people or all of the above.

• help them solve a mental pressure/problem

• dad seeing me getting settled with family

while writing this i asked for another paper and while the waiter got me one… i realised another good way to answer this question is

what did others do that brought me joy in my life?

• giving me more opportunities

• loyalty

• dad giving food to homeless families living under that bridge and me watching everyone one of them being incredibly happy. The Real Joy.

  • I was happy to see them happy - this is when i started developing empathy.

• when you tip the waiter

• had a funny thought after reading the cafe’s name i’m sitting in “Nakey”

  • when someone gets naked - they brought me joy

• inviting someone to a closed cabal/party/group

• a friend teaching me how to do a specific move in the bouldering gym

  • (S/O to arnold for showing and shouting “Allez Allez” when I needed)

• buying me flowers & brownie (i remember you)

• having a 3AM conversation

• complementing me

• when someone tell me they read my writing

• when I share my achievements with others and i find them being genuinely happy for me.

after i finished writing this, i told myself that the answers i wrote in the ““What did others do that brought me joy in my life?” section, these are the easiest way to bring joy into others life.

it’s simple.

what made you happy, will make others happy too.
